No. 368 - Hungering for Righteousness

Seeking the Truth

Hungering for Righteousness

Matthew 5:6

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled."

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, as I seek Your truth today, I ask that You give me a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness. Help me to desire what is good and holy in Your eyes. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

Matthew 5 is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches His disciples and the crowd about the nature of true blessedness. The Beatitudes, found in verses 3-12, describe the characteristics of those who live according to God’s will and the blessings they will receive. In verse 6, Jesus speaks specifically about the need to hunger and thirst for righteousness, which is the desire to live in a way that pleases God. Those who sincerely seek this will be satisfied by God Himself.

Be Encouraged

When Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,” He was speaking about a deep longing to live according to God’s truth. Just as our bodies need food and water to survive, our souls need righteousness to thrive. In a world where people often chase after wealth and fame, Jesus encourages us to pursue righteousness instead. When we do, God promises that we will be filled—spiritually satisfied and blessed.

Application

Psalm 42:1 says, "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God." Just like the psalmist, we should desire God's presence and His righteousness in our lives. This kind of hunger drives us to seek God daily in His word, in prayer, and through a life of obedience.

In James 4:8, we are told, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." When we actively seek God and strive for righteousness, He draws closer to us, fulfilling our deepest spiritual needs. Think about the times when you’ve faced difficult decisions—whether at work, at home, or with friends. In those moments, choosing to do what is right, even when it is hard, brings peace and joy that only God can provide. It’s through these choices that we find ourselves spiritually filled, just as Jesus promised.

Invitation

If you have not yet surrendered your life to Christ, I invite you to begin your journey of seeking righteousness today. God's word teaches that we can only be truly righteous through Jesus Christ. Visit a nearby church of Christ, where you will be assisted to obey the gospel of Christ through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all your past sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). Once you obey, the Lord will add you to His church, where you will continue to learn more about God and put Christ’s commandments into practice (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:47). Do not wait; let the hunger for righteousness guide you to Christ today. As you meditate on this message, I also encourage you to share it with your loved ones so they too may seek the truth and righteousness of God.

Concluding Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me today of the importance of hungering for righteousness. Help me to continue seeking Your will in all I do, and may my life be filled with Your truth and blessings. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
