No. 358 - Avoiding Dissensions and Divisions in the Body of Christ

The Consequences of Fleshly Desires

Avoiding Dissensions and Divisions in the Body of Christ

Titus 3:9-10

"But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition."

Prayer

Heavenly Father, open my eyes to see the importance of unity in Your church. Help me to avoid unnecessary disputes that cause division among Your people. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

Titus 3 is a letter from the Apostle Paul to Titus, guiding him on how Christians should live in their communities. Paul encourages good works and godly behaviour, stressing the importance of unity within the church. Verses 9 and 10 specifically focus on avoiding arguments over unimportant matters and rejecting those who stir up division. Paul’s instructions here are clear: stay away from foolish debates that lead to quarrels and divisions, as they do not benefit the church or anyone’s spiritual growth.

Be Encouraged

Divisions within the church often start with small disagreements that grow when people refuse to let go of their own opinions. Paul warns against getting caught up in debates over trivial matters. For example, imagine a team of workers arguing over the best way to build a house, but in the end, nothing is built because they could not agree. In the same way, when we let minor disagreements become big issues, we fail to accomplish God's work. Instead of focusing on what divides us, we should work together, love one another, and build the body of Christ in unity.

Application

As followers of Christ, we are called to promote peace and avoid conflict. Proverbs 15:1 teaches us, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Also, 1 Corinthians 1:10 urges us to be “perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” In life, we might face situations where we are tempted to argue about small things—maybe with family, friends, or in the church. When these moments come, remember the call to unity and peace. Be willing to listen and let go of unnecessary arguments so that the church can grow strong in love and harmony.

Invitation

If you have not yet committed your life to Christ, now is the time to seek the peace and unity that only He can provide. Visit any nearby Church of Christ to be assisted in obeying the gospel of Christ through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins and your salvation (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). The Lord will add you to His church, where you will learn more about His teachings and practise His commandments (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:47). Do not allow divisiveness or disagreement to keep you from the truth. Come to Christ, and He will lead you into unity with His people. Share this message with others so they, too, may find peace in the body of Christ.

Concluding Prayer

Thank You, Lord, for showing me the importance of unity in Your church. Help me to avoid anything that causes division and to always work for peace and harmony among Your people. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless your day.
