Honouring Our Heavenly Father

The Holiness of God’s Name

Honouring Our Heavenly Father

Matthew 6:9

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name."

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, as I reflect on Your Word today, grant me insight into the significance of honoring Your holy name. Help me understand the depth of calling You "Our Father in heaven." In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, emphasizing the reverence and holiness of God's name. The phrase "Our Father in heaven" acknowledges God's authority, majesty, and loving care over His children. By starting the Lord's Prayer with this address, Jesus teaches us to approach God with reverence and trust.

Be Encouraged

Calling God "Our Father in heaven" reminds us of our intimate relationship with Him as His beloved children. Just as a devoted earthly father cares for his children, our heavenly Father provides for our needs, protects us, and loves us unconditionally. This truth encourages us to trust Him wholeheartedly and seek His will in our lives.

Moreover, when we pray "hallowed be your name," we recognize the holiness and uniqueness of God. By honoring His name, we commit ourselves to living in a way that reflects His character and brings glory to Him. Let us strive to honor God in all aspects of our lives, through our words, actions, and attitudes.

Additional Verses

- Psalm 29:2: "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness."

This verse emphasizes the importance of giving glory to God's name and worshiping Him in holiness. It echoes the sentiment of honoring God's name as expressed in Matthew 6:9.

- Isaiah 6:3: "And one called to another and said: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!'"

Isaiah's vision of God's holiness highlights the reverence and awe due to His name. As we honor God's holiness, we acknowledge His supreme majesty and sovereignty over all creation.

Invitation

I invite you to visit any church of Christ close to you. You will be assisted in understanding how to obey the gospel of Christ, through believing in Him as the Son of God (Matthew 16:16; John 8:24) and repenting of your sins (Acts 17:30-31). Through baptism, you can receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). By obeying the gospel, you honour God's holiness and invite His presence into your life.

Concluding Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for the privilege of calling You our Father in heaven. Help us to honor Your name in all we do and say today. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless your day.
