No.246 - Selfless Service

The Service of God’s Servants

Selfless Service

Philippians 2:3-4

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, guide me to understand the true essence of selfless service. Help me to set aside my selfish ambitions and to genuinely prioritize the needs of others above my own. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

In Philippians 2, Paul emphasizes the importance of humility and selflessness in the Christian life. He encourages believers to imitate the humble attitude of Christ, who willingly sacrificed Himself for the salvation of humanity. The selected verses urge believers to avoid selfish ambition and pride, instead exhorting them to regard others as more significant and to prioritize their interests. Paul's exhortation is rooted in the example of Christ, who demonstrated ultimate selflessness through His sacrificial death on the cross.

Be Encouraged

Selfless service is not merely about performing acts of kindness but is rooted in a genuine concern for others. Consider the example of a volunteer at a homeless shelter who not only provides meals but also takes the time to listen to the stories and struggles of those they serve, treating them with dignity and respect. Similarly, as Christians, we are called to go beyond superficial acts of service and genuinely care for the needs of others, considering their well-being as more important than our own.

When we prioritize the interests of others above our own, we reflect the love and humility of Christ. This selflessness fosters unity within the body of believers and demonstrates the transformative power of the gospel. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, let us seek opportunities to serve selflessly, following the example of our Savior.

Additional Verses

- Romans 12:10: "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor."

- Galatians 5:13: "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another."

Invitation

I invite you to consider the call to selfless service seriously. You must be saved by obeying the gospel of Christ through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). Let us strive to imitate Christ's humility and sacrificial love in all areas of our lives. Join us in worship and service at a local church of Christ, where you can experience the joy of serving others selflessly and growing in your relationship with God.

Concluding Prayer

Lord, thank you for teaching us the value of selfless service. Help me to emulate the humility of Christ and to prioritize the needs of others above my own. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless your day.
