No. 238: The Blessing of Giving
1 Corinthians 16:1-2
"Now concerning the collection for
the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On
the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it
up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come."
Starting Prayer
Dear Lord, as I meditate on Your Word
today, please grant me insight into the blessings of giving. Help me understand
the importance of generosity and stewardship in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Background
In 1
Corinthians 16, Paul instructs the Corinthian church regarding the collection
for the saints in Jerusalem. He emphasizes the importance of regular and
systematic giving, urging the Corinthians to contribute as they have prospered.
The selected verses highlight the principle of setting aside a portion of one's
earnings on the first day of each week, demonstrating both consistency and
intentionality in giving. Paul's instruction reflects God's desire for His
people to be generous and responsible stewards of the resources He has
entrusted to them.
Be Encouraged
The principle
of giving outlined in these verses teaches us the importance of intentional and
consistent generosity. Just as the Corinthians were instructed to set aside a
portion of their income each week, we too should cultivate a habit of giving
regularly. Through our faithful stewardship, we participate in God's work of
providing for the needs of others and furthering His kingdom on earth.
Moreover, giving is an expression of gratitude for God's blessings in our lives
and an acknowledgment of His ownership of all things. As we give according to
our means, we experience the joy and fulfillment that come from sharing with
others and contributing to God's purposes.
Additional Verses
- Proverbs
3:9-10: "Honor the Lord with your
wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be
filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine."
- 2
Corinthians 9:7: "Each one must give
as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God
loves a cheerful giver."
Invitation
As a
Christian, how have you contributed financially to assist those in need? If you
have not yet become a Christian, I invite you to visit a nearby church of
Christ, where you will be guided in accepting God's offer of salvation through
faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism
for the forgiveness of sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). Through this process, you
can experience the joy of participating in God's work and His kingdom. The
blessing of giving is an essential aspect of the Christian journey. Why not
join us in worship, where you can learn more about the blessings of giving and
find a community that values generosity and stewardship?
Concluding Prayer
Thank you,
Lord, for the insight and understanding You have given me today regarding the
blessing of giving. Help me to be faithful in my stewardship and to cultivate a
generous heart. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
May the Lord bless your day.
