No. 269 - The Ultimate Example of Humility

The Humility of God’s Son

The Ultimate Example of Humility

Philippians 2:5-11 (ESV)

"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, open my heart to understand and follow the humility of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to embrace His example in my daily life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

Philippians 2 is a powerful chapter where Paul encourages the church in Philippi to live in unity and humility. Verses 5-11 specifically focus on the example of Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself by becoming human and dying on the cross for our sins. This passage highlights the importance of adopting Christ's mindset of humility and obedience.

Be Encouraged

The humility of Jesus is the ultimate example for us. Though He was God, He chose to become a servant and live among us. Imagine the King of kings washing the feet of His disciples. This act of humility is a powerful lesson for us. We are called to serve others selflessly, putting their needs before our own. When we humble ourselves, we reflect the character of Christ and bring glory to God.

Consider how Jesus’ humility led to His exaltation by God. He did not seek His own glory but submitted to God’s will, even to the point of death. This resulted in God exalting Him above all. James 4:10 says, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." When we follow Christ’s example of humility, we too can experience God's lifting up in our lives. It’s not about seeking our own honour but about glorifying God through our actions.

Application

Today's scripture encourages us to adopt the mindset of Christ in our daily lives. Colossians 3:12 says, "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience." Let us strive to embody these qualities, reflecting the humility of Jesus in our interactions with others.

Another verse that goes with today's message is 1 Peter 5:6, "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you." By living humbly and serving others, we trust in God's timing and His plan for our exaltation.

Invitation

If you have not yet committed your life to Christ, I invite you to experience His love and humility. Visit a nearby Church of Christ to learn more and find support in your walk with God. Begin your journey with faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins to be saved (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38).

I encourage you to put today’s message into practice. Let Christ's humility shine through you and share this message with your loved ones, spreading His love and example.

Concluding Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for teaching me about the humility of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to follow His example and live a life that honours You. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

What is your thought on today's title? Can you share with me?

May the Lord bless your day.
