No. 270 - The Servant King

The Humility of God’s Son

The Servant King

John 13:1-17 (ESV)

Key Verses:

"Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him." (John 13:3-5)

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, open my heart and mind to understand and follow the humility shown by Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to apply this example in my daily life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

John 13 records a significant moment in Jesus' ministry: the Last Supper. Here, Jesus washes His disciples' feet, demonstrating profound humility and servant leadership. This act was unexpected because washing feet was typically the role of a servant. Jesus used this moment to teach His disciples about true greatness in God's kingdom.

Be Encouraged

The humility of Jesus in washing His disciples' feet is a powerful lesson for us today. He, the Son of God, took on the role of a servant to show us that no act of service is too small or beneath us. In our lives, we are often tempted to seek positions of power and recognition, but Jesus teaches us that true greatness comes from serving others. Imagine the impact we can have if we approach every task, no matter how menial, with the humility of Christ.

Another key lesson from this passage is the importance of leading by example. Jesus did not just tell His disciples about humility; He showed them. By washing their feet, He demonstrated that leaders must also be willing to serve. This is a call to action for us. Whether at home, work, or in our communities, we should strive to serve others selflessly. In doing so, we reflect Christ's love and humility, encouraging those around us to do the same.

Application

Today's scripture encourages us to embrace humility in all aspects of our lives. Philippians 2:3-4 says, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." Let us put these words into practice, serving others with a humble heart.

Another verse that aligns with today's message is Matthew 20:26-28, where Jesus says, "But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." By following Jesus' example, we can truly make a difference in the lives of those around us.

Invitation

If you have not yet committed your life to Christ, I invite you to experience His love and humility. Visit a nearby Church of Christ to learn more and find support in your walk with God. Begin your journey with faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins to be saved (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38).

I encourage you to put today’s message into practice. Let Christ's humility shine through you and share this message with your loved ones, spreading His love and example.

Concluding Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for teaching me about the humility of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to follow His example and live a life that honours You. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless your day.
