No. 272 - Clothed with Humility
The Humility of God’s Son
Clothed with Humility
1 Peter 5:5-6 (ESV)
"Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the
elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for
'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.' Humble yourselves,
therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt
you."
Starting Prayer
Dear Lord, grant me the wisdom to understand the
importance of humility. Help me to embrace and practice it in my daily life. In
Jesus' name. Amen.
Background
1
Peter 5 is a chapter where Peter gives guidance to both elders and the younger
members of the church. He emphasizes the importance of humility and submission
within the Christian community. In verses 5-6, Peter particularly focuses on
the need for humility, reminding us that God opposes the proud but gives grace
to the humble.
Be Encouraged
Humility
is a virtue that often goes against the values of our world, which promotes
pride and self-exaltation. Yet, Peter urges us to "clothe ourselves with
humility." Just as we put on clothes every day, we should also consciously
choose to practice humility daily. Imagine a community where everyone respects
and values each other, regardless of age or status. This is the kind of
environment humility creates.
Additionally,
Peter assures us that when we humble ourselves under God's mighty hand, He will
lift us up in due time. This promise gives us hope and encouragement. We don't
need to seek recognition or exaltation from others; God Himself will exalt us
when the time is right. Think of a seed that is planted in the ground. It stays
hidden and grows roots first before it sprouts above the ground. In the same
way, our humble actions may not be immediately visible, but God sees them and
will honour them in due time.
Application
To
deepen our understanding of humility, consider these verses: James 4:10, which
says, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you," and
Proverbs 22:4, which states, "The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
is riches and honour and life." These verses highlight the blessings that
come from living a humble life.
Invitation
If
you have not yet committed your life to Christ, I invite you to visit the
nearest Church of Christ where you will be assisted to obey the gospel of
Christ, through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38;
17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins to be saved (Mark
16:16; Acts 2:38).
For
those already in Christ, I encourage you to put today’s message into practice.
Let Christ's humility shine through you and share this message with your loved
ones, spreading His love and example.
Concluding Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for teaching me about the power
and beauty of humility. Help me to live humbly each day, trusting in Your promise
to lift me up in due time. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
May
the Lord bless your day.
