No. 274 - The Honour of Humility

The Humility of God’s Son

The Honour of Humility

Luke 14:11

"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to understand the true meaning of humility and to live it out in my daily life. Open my heart to learn from Your Word today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

In Luke 14, Jesus is at a meal with Pharisees and uses the occasion to teach about humility and hospitality. He tells a parable about choosing the lower place at a banquet to avoid embarrassment and to be honoured when invited to move up. Verse 11 summarises the lesson: those who exalt themselves will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Be Encouraged

Humility often goes against our natural instincts. We live in a world that values self-promotion and pride. However, Jesus teaches us that true honour comes from humility. Imagine being at a gathering and taking a humble position, not seeking attention or praise. When the host recognises your humility and honours you publicly, it is much more meaningful. This is how God operates in His kingdom. When we humble ourselves before Him and others, He sees our hearts and exalts us at the right time.

Think about moments in your life when you might have sought recognition or praise. How different would those moments be if you had chosen humility instead? True humility is not about thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. It’s about serving others and putting their needs above your own. As we practice this, we reflect Jesus' character and draw others to Him.

Application

To further embrace humility, consider these verses: Philippians 2:3, which says, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves," and Proverbs 22:4, which states, "The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honour and life." These scriptures remind us of the blessings that come from living a humble life.

Invitation

If you have not yet committed your life to Christ, I invite you to visit any nearby Church of Christ where you will be assisted to obey the gospel of Christ: through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins to be saved (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38).

I encourage you to put today’s message into practice. Choose humility in your interactions and trust God to honour you in His time. Share this message with your loved ones, spreading the beauty of living humbly before God.

Concluding Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for teaching me about the power of humility. Help me to live humbly each day and to trust in Your timing for honour. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

I encourage you to share your thoughts on today's meditation with me so I know how you have received the message.

May the Lord bless your day.
