No. 336 - The Greatness of Our God

The Praise of God’s Glory

The Greatness of Our God

Psalm 96:4-5

"For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the Lord made the heavens."

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, as I reflect on Your greatness, open my heart to understand the depth of Your power and glory. Help me to see beyond the distractions of this world and focus on You alone. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

Psalm 96 is a joyful song of praise, inviting all creation to give glory to God. It is part of a collection of psalms that call upon people to worship the Lord as the one true God. Psalm 96:4-5 contrasts the Lord with the idols of the nations, emphasising His supreme power as the Creator of the heavens. These verses remind us that while others may worship false gods, our God is the one who made the universe and is worthy of all praise.

Be Encouraged

The verses from Psalm 96 remind us that the Lord is truly great and deserving of our highest praise. In a world filled with distractions, people are often tempted to follow false gods, whether they be material wealth, power, or fame. These things may seem important, but in reality, they are like idols, offering no real hope or peace. The psalmist encourages us to turn our attention away from these empty pursuits and focus on the Creator of all things, who alone is worthy of our worship. When we acknowledge God's greatness, we find true fulfilment and joy.

We are also reminded that God’s greatness is not just about His power, but also about His care for His creation. The same God who made the heavens is deeply concerned about our lives. He watches over us, guides us, and provides for us in ways that no idol ever could. Knowing this should fill our hearts with gratitude and spur us to live lives of worship. As Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Let us keep our focus on God and praise Him for His greatness every day.

Application

We live in a time when people are easily drawn to idols in various forms, whether it be the pursuit of money, relationships, or personal ambitions. But, as Psalm 96:4-5 teaches us, these are nothing compared to the greatness of our God. In Exodus 20:3, God commands, "You shall have no other gods before Me." Let us take this to heart and be mindful of where we place our trust and devotion. Another verse to consider is Jeremiah 10:6, which says, "Inasmuch as there is none like You, O Lord (You are great, and Your name is great in might)." We must honour God above all else and give Him the praise He deserves.

Invitation

If you have not yet committed your life to Christ, I encourage you to visit a nearby Church of Christ to learn more about how to obey the gospel. Through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of your sins and salvation (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38), you can become part of God’s family. The Lord will add you to His church, where you will continue to grow in your knowledge of Him and live according to His will (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:47). Embrace the greatness of our God and find peace in His presence. Today is a perfect day to begin this journey with Him. Praise Him for who He is and allow His greatness to transform your life.

Concluding Prayer

Dear Father, I thank You for revealing Your greatness to me through Your Word. Help me to remember that You alone are worthy of all my praise and that nothing in this world compares to You. May I live each day focused on Your greatness and share Your glory with others. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless your day.
