No. 289 - The Requirement of the Passover Lamb

The Sacrifice of God’s Lamb

The Requirement of the Passover Lamb

Exodus 12:46 (ESV)

"It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones."

Starting Prayer

Dear Lord, as I meditate on the requirement of the Passover lamb, grant me wisdom to understand its significance and how it points to Christ. Help me see Your plan of salvation through Jesus, the perfect Lamb. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Background

In Exodus 12, God institutes the Passover, a memorial of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt through the blood of the lamb. The lamb’s blood on the doorposts protected them from the plague of death. Verse 46 emphasizes the specific instructions: the Passover lamb must be eaten within one household, none of its flesh taken outside, and none of its bones broken. These details ensured that the lamb’s sacrifice was complete and effective for protection and salvation.

Be Encouraged

Just as the Passover lamb’s blood protected the Israelites from death, Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb, offers us protection from spiritual death. His sacrifice was complete, fulfilling all requirements for our salvation. The detail about not breaking any bones of the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:46) finds fulfillment in Jesus, whose bones were not broken during His crucifixion (John 19:36), fulfilling prophecy and demonstrating His perfect sacrifice.

Consider a scenario where someone prepares meticulously for an important event. Every detail is crucial for success. God’s requirement regarding the Passover lamb shows His attention to detail in providing a way for His people to be saved. In Christ, every detail of God’s plan for our salvation is fulfilled, ensuring that all who trust in Him are saved and protected.

Application

Reflecting on today’s theme, read 1 Corinthians 5:7, “Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” Also, consider Hebrews 9:22, “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

Invitation

If you have not yet embraced Christ as your Passover Lamb, I invite you to visit a nearby Church of Christ. There, you can learn how to obey the gospel of Christ through faith (Hebrews 11:6), repentance from sin (Acts 2:38; 17:30-31), and baptism for the forgiveness of all past sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). In doing so, you will be added to His church, where you can continue to grow in knowledge and practice of God’s word (Matthew 28:18-20).

For those already walking with Christ, let us cherish the completeness of His sacrifice and share this message of salvation with others. Let’s live out our faith daily, reflecting Christ’s sacrificial love to those around us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord, thank You for revealing Your salvation through the Passover lamb and ultimately through Jesus Christ. Help me to appreciate the depth of Your plan and to live in gratitude for Your sacrificial love. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

May the Lord bless your day.
